If you believe the Mayans, the world is going to end in about ten days. Okay, the Mayans never actually prognosticated that, they just let their calendar run out then. And hey, why not? 2012 was a long freaking way off and who doesn’t like to procrastinate? At least the Mayans had the foresight to make a calendaring system that would last for a good long while. By comparison to modern civilization, they look pretty good. After all, when I was growing up, people were designing calendaring systems that were insufficiently robust to handle the rollover to the year 2000 (to say nothing of the year 2038).
Anyway, there’s still a bunch of people out there who believe that the end times are upon us. I tend to doubt that for several reasons, the very least being that if the Mayans were so good at predicting the future, we would still have Mayans around today. Anyway, there doesn’t seem to be any guidance about the method of the impending cataclysm, but one of the biggest threats to humanity is probably nuclear war. So if we are on the precipice of the end of days, maybe Yo La Tengo’s cover of Sun Ra’s “Nuclear War” should be on the playlist.
