366TAS: 7:07 – The Sugarhill Gang – Rappers’ Delight

How do you follow Bruce Springsteen and “Layla”? How about with one of the biggest, most influential hip-hop songs of all time. In 1979, “Rappers’ Delight” was the first hip-hop song to crack the top 40. Like “Layla”, a shortened version of the song was produced for radio play. That alternate version tripped me up once when I went to sing the song at karaoke one night, having listened to the full version at home and getting the shorter rendition at karaoke. No surprise here though.

This is what I’m taking about, “Hotel, motel, Holiday Inn!” So many of these lines have been sampled for other rap songs that sometimes we forget about the basics. Old School. Though I actually do prefer the shorten version better, where the last rap is left off.
