366TAS: 7:02 – Soundgarden – Like Suicide

Soundgarden has a new album coming out in a few days, their first studio LP since 1996’s Down on the Upside. My impression is that comeback efforts after such a lengthy absence aren’t often successful. Steely Dan pulled it off, taking a 20 year break between Gaucho and Two Against Nature. Bill Fay came out with a well-regarded album this year that was his first since 1971, a 40 year gap. But generally, I think of so many of the aging rockers looking to make another quick buck or two (million). But maybe I’m just thinking of Chinese Democracy. Any other good ones I’m forgetting?

I don’t have high hopes for this new Soundgarden effort and with the way the music landscape has changed since they were at their peak in the early 90’s, perhaps they’re something of a band out of time. That said, the old grunge bands are more or less all gone now. Maybe Soundgarden will be able to come around with another fresh take. Chris Cornell’s solo effort, however, only reinforces the low expectations. I guess we’ll see…

  1. I liked the album that Urge Overkill put out last year, which was their first in sixteen years.
