366TAS: 6:54 – Fatboy Slim – The Rockafeller Skank

“Right about now, the funk soul brother // Check it out now! The funk soul brother!”

That’s it, right there. Throw in a little bit of “Fatboy Slim is..”, and you have the full and complete lyrics to “The Rockafeller Skank”. A simple statement in 14 words, the statement presumably being, “attention party people, pay heed to what is going on over here in the direction of Fatboy Slim and then proceed to dance uncontrollably for about seven minutes”.

In a way, this is a really remarkable song. It’s one of the top dance tracks of the late 90’s, but when you mention it to someone, the first thing they always think of is the lyrics. I remember one night at Syracuse where I was out on the quad throwing frisbees with Josh and friends when some drunk girls were wandering back to their dorms on Mount Olympus from the bars on M Street. One of them, in a loud, drunken proclamation, decreed “The Rockafeller Skank” to be the “best song ever!!“, as she stumbled home repeating the sum total of the lyrics over and over again. Would this song have been such a big hit if it were an instrumental? Maybe, but I doubt it.

Is it terrible that when I heard this song that the very first thing that pops into my mind is the ludicrous scene from the terrible movie She’s All That where Usher (playing DJ for a high school prom!) puts this track on and everyone breaks out in choreographed dance? Maybe I just secretly want to be able to break out into choreographed dance whenever I want too.
