366TAS: 6:49 – Au Revoir Simone – The Way to There

To the best of my recollection, I only know of two people named “Simone”. One of those is Simone Foster, an IHP student from the ABC sitcom, “Head of the Class” that aired in the late 80’s. The only actual Simone who I know is a girl who I worked with at the Shop ‘n Save back in high school. She wasn’t a “Simone” back then, but she often talked about changing her name such that it would be. After leaving the store, the next time I saw her, strangely enough, was at a Fidelity Investments recruiting event in Boston my senior year of college. By then, she had changed her name. Googling her now, the first search hit is for her mugshot after being arrested for DUI down in Florida. What can she do? It’s a crazy state!

None of this has anything to do with the band’s name, which is taken from a line in Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, but there it is. “The Way to There” isn’t Au Revoir Simone’s best work (although it does come from their fine 2007 album, The Bird of Music), but it is my best 6:49 song.

Not my favorite band, yet I strangely have two of their albums & I did once see them live. If I had to pick, then I would pick “All or Nothing” (4:27) off their Still Night, Still Light album.
