If my music library contained George Michael’s “Freedom! ’90” (the remastered version from his greatest hits collection, Twenty Five, as opposed to the original version from Listen Without Prejudice, Vol. 1 which is two seconds longer), that would have been today’s pick. After all, George Michael was a karaoke favorite of Pittsburgh Dan and so that’s a relevant association for me. Besides, I’m always amused when musicians drop year references into their songs… they can sound so silly 10 or 20 years later.
But that’s neither here nor there. What is here and now is Gayngs. Gayngs is an indie rock supergroup that includes members of Bon Iver, Megafaun, Doomtree, Poliça, Mar Har Superstar, Digitata and the Rosebuds. “The Gaudy Side of Town” is the only track they did that I know, and they may never do anything together again. It’s actually a kind of random choice. God Street Wine’s “Into the Sea” and the Dirty Projectors’ “Useful Chamber” both would have probably been better picks here, but now the post is written and since I’m already behind schedule, I’m not going back to change it. Year-end edits, here I come!
