I’m pretty much naturally disposed to appreciating jazz music, but I still don’t pull it out that often. Maybe it’s because I have a hard time distinguishing one song or even one artist from another. What’s more, I typically only feel like I’m in a jazz kind of mood occasionally. Even here on the 366TAS project, most of the jazz picks are kinda “filler”, at least in the sense that they’re what I’ll go to when I don’t have anything else.
That’s not an indictment of the music though, because every time I pull out the Cannonball Adderley (who shares my birthday!), Duke Ellington or Thelonious Monk, I really enjoy it quite a bit. In fact, a generic jazz track in my library may be able to fill in here or there because they’re interchangeably good. I mean, there’s a lot of all-time greats in there, and it’s hard to go wrong with a guy like Thelonious Monk.
