As you’ve no doubt heard, Clint Eastwood himself made a speech at the Republican national convention the other day. I didn’t see it, but I could probably have predicted the reaction before anyone realized how unconventional it would be. Team red would praise it, team blue would ridicule it. The same thing is going to happen in reverse for whatever speeches are given this week at the Democratic convention, pretty much no matter what happens. It’s tedious nonsense and it annoys the crap out of me, especially when I’ve had this post planned for today since December.
Four years ago, any mention of Alaska (in any context) would be met with Sarah Palin references and commentary, at least in the discussions I was privy to around town. This went on for years after the fact. It’s died down a bit now, but I’m sure it’s still out there. Likewise, I suspect Clint Eastwood references will be politically tinged for the foreseeable future. That’s a shame, because the Gorillaz tune that bears his name is pretty great.
