Man, I hate to rag on my dad the day before his birthday, but that’s just the way the songs fell out. I’m pretty sure my dad was oblivious to the music I was listening to when I grew up. On two occasions, he confiscated tapes from my collection because he disapproved of the content. I’m pretty sure that didn’t necessarily mean that he approved of the rest, after all he took my copy of the Clash’s Combat Rock because he thought Joe Strummer and co. were singing “fuck the casbah”.
The other tape he took was Alice in Chains’ Dirt, and I recall that was just because it had one of those “Parental Advisory/Explicit Lyrics” stickers on it. And y’know, I think there’s maybe one or two swear words… on the whole album. Compare that to what else I was listening to and… well… yeah, I was laughing that he didn’t hear what Cypress Hill or N.W.A. (amongst others) had to say.
Anyway, I think I turned out okay… a reasonably productive and friendly member of society. So I guess I wasn’t corrupted or whatever by the music that influenced my early years. Cool, huh?
