When I was in elementary school, I remember a few artists that really hit it big and got everyone’s attention: Bon Jovi, Guns N’ Roses, the sigh New Kids on the Block. Now maybe the memories of yesteryear are getting fuzzy, but I seem to remember DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince’s debut album, He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper attaining the same status. The album’s success was driven by the two hit songs, “Nightmare on My Street” and “Parents Just Don’t Understand”. I suppose the rest of the album was okay too, even if I remember being disappointed by it on the first listen. Only one of those two big hit songs seems to have stood the test of time and become a cultural bellwether though, and it wasn’t “Nightmare”.
