366TAS: 4:56 – Mazzy Star – Fade Into You

“Fade Into You” is a fine song and nothing against Mazzy Star, but I really just don’t have anything to say here. Maybe another 4:56 song would have given me more to work with? Let’s take a look at the options from bands I’ve used already:

“The Hurting One” was one of the Vibro Kings’ top tunes, but I did want to post their live rendition of “Love Song”. In turn, I could have swapped the 4:10 pick out for something like Action Figure Party’s “Gamera” to match the Bonobo track, “Kong” in the Syracuse University UNIX system server collection (The SUNIX servers were all named after Godzilla foes). Alternatively, I could have used something more familiar like Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” or Juice Newton’s all-time-great misheard lyric track, “Angel of the Morning”. After all, I wouldn’t want my readers to neglect their oral hygiene!

Another 4:56 track I could have used was The Lonely Forest’s “Two Notes and a Beat”, an integral part of the blitz from the second half of 2011’s Arrows that pushed the album high up my best of the year list. Then I have to replace them in the 4:20 spot, maybe with Ice Cube’s “It Was a Good Day”, Lionel Richie’s “All Night Long” or one of mom’s favorite artists, Carly Simon with “You’re So Vain” (and yes, the song is about me!).

Goldfrapp’s “Black Cherry”, the Polyphonic Spree’s “Diamonds/Devotion to Majesty”, ABBA’s “The Winner Takes it All” and Austra’s “Beat and the Pulse” would have all been viable here too, not to mention a few others. With nearly 200 tracks in the books and starting to move beyond more common song times, I’m at the point where after subtracting the already used artists out, I only have about 15 or so choices to pick from each day. Don’t worry, there’s a grand plan to get through the whole year, but there are going to be a lot fewer last minute substitutions and trade-outs going forward. But this little exercise might give you some idea of what it’s like to put together the big list of 366 tracks. Fun, but with some tough choices! And hey, “Fade Into You” is pretty good in its own right…
