It’s totally cheating, but one of my favorite albums of 2012 is Goldfrapp’s The Singles compilation of their greatest hits. Nevertheless, I never listened to Goldfrapp before this year, so it’s all new to me! And hey, there are two new tracks on the album, so I can legitimately put The Singles on my best of 2012 list, right? No, that’s still cheating? Okay then.
In any case, I do try and “discover” a few established and older artists every year. The catalog of older artists that I haven’t explored is substantially larger than the avalanche of new stuff to keep up with these days and once you find something that you like from the past, you don’t have to wait for new albums to come out to find more great music to enjoy. In Goldfrapp’s case, that’s five albums worth of new material. “Ride a White Horse” is certainly a highlight, but I have a feeling that if two Goldfrapp albums weren’t extremely recent additions to my collection, another song would have gotten the call. At the end of the year, I might post a revised 366TAS that takes into account all the stuff I’ve picked up over the course of 2012.
