In late December 2009, my cousin was getting married down in Richmond, VA. No sweat, I thought, I’ll just drive down Friday night, stay with grandma and have a festive time of things on Saturday. Unfortunately, the weather decided not to cooperate, throwing a massive snowstorm at the mid-Atlantic region right as I was to be driving south. I took the weather into account and gave myself plenty of time to beat the snow to Richmond, but what I didn’t plan for was the extremely heavy traffic that would make the trip from DC to Fredericksburg take a whopping three hours. Shortly thereafter, the snow started coming down hard and within minutes, accumulation on the road turned the journey into a treacherous slow crawl.
I never made it to Richmond that night, but after six hours on the road, I found my way to my cousin’s house in Mechanicsville, just north of Richmond. Overnight, the snow continued to fall and by morning, about a foot had accumulated. My cousin’s subdivision was completely snowed in and there wasn’t much we could do about it, so my cousin’s family decided to kick back that morning and watch The Hangover. From what I’ve heard, I’m the only person who doesn’t think it’s a hilariously great movie. I might have laughed once. The whole movie. Maybe.
There was one bit of the movie that did make me smile a bit, and that was the blackjack scene where Wolfmother’s “Joker & the Thief” serves as the background music. The family didn’t seem to care much, but I was delighted. Eventually, with a big assist from my cousin-in-law, I did make it down to the wedding. The next afternoon, I had another traffic-enhanced trip back to DC. It was nice to see what little of the family made it to the wedding, but aside from that, Wolfmother’s cameo was the highlight of an otherwise difficult weekend. Oh, and here’s the clip from The Hangover; the relevant scene starts about a minute in:
