366TAS: 4:19 – Michael Jackson – Beat It

Way back before I was picking out music for myself, I would go through my parents’ records and put stuff on while I played around the house. One of my favorite albums in my folks’ collection was Michael Jackson’s Thriller. It’s no surprise that I was a big fan, as it’s one of the all-time classic albums, but what puzzles me is which one of my parents was the Michael Jackson fan. He just doesn’t fit in really well with either one of their tastes. But hey, back then, MJ was such a big star that I can understand how just about anyone could have been swept away with the Thriller bug. So for all you new parents out there reading this, keep that in mind when you go to pick up this year’s trendy, hot new album. There’s some chance that with an assist from an Eddie Van Halen guitar solo, it’ll be an all-time classic, but it might also make your kids one day wonder, “What were they thinking?!?”

I’ve got the most uplifting song in my collection RE: teenage hellraising and admiration for deceased musicians: the Drive-By Truckers’ “Let There Be Rock.”
