366TAS: 4:11 – Stevie Wonder – I Wish

Hey look! It’s that song the Vibro Kings used to play… only somebody else is playing it! Like most everyone else, my tastes were influenced at an early age by the records my parents owned and listened to. Mostly, that was 70’s and early 80’s singer-songwriter types. Carly Simon, Phoebe Snow, Carole King, Billy Joel and Simon and Garfunkel were artists that I heard a lot. Somewhere in the mix was Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life. It was the only Stevie Wonder album my folks owned and it left me with the impression that “I Wish” and “Sir Duke” were Stevie’s two biggest and greatest songs. I actually still have that opinion to this day, and there’s a reasonable argument for the proposition. After all, the Vibro Kings didn’t choose to cover “I Just Called to Say I Love You.”

I’ve got one from early 1990: Michael Penn’s “No Myth.”

This might be the first pick that I can’t stand behind. Still, I am also torn on what is an appropriate alternative. I guess I would say “I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)” (4:53) with a slim edge over “Superstition” (4:26).
