366TAS: 4:10 – Vibro Kings – Love Song

There’s no band I’ve seen play live more often than the Vibro Kings. From the first time I saw them steal the show despite being the one band I had little interest in seeing at a small one-day festival at the I.C. Light Amphitheater to their farewell concert at Nick’s Fat City, the Vibro Kings’ shows were a circled date on my calendar throughout college and the years immediately afterwards.

That first show, frontman Doug Khorey came out walking on stilts and wearing a sequined Uncle Sam costume. Another show, the band threw out some promo tapes and I used my frisbee skills to sky the crowd and grab two at once (with the same hand!). A donation of the extra tape led to a couple dates with a cute girl with a pretty unfortunate name. Taking the stage to “18 and Life”, tearing a phone book in half and turning into confetti to shower the crowd from the balcony at Nick’s Fat City? Yeah, I was there for that too. Freezing outdoor show on New Year’s Eve? I was one of about six people in the crowd. Ah, memories…

The Vibro Kings only ever put out one studio album, Valentine From Arizona. It was fine, but it didn’t capture Doug Khorey’s charisma, the horn section that they would bring out for live shows (whose nickname escapes me right now) or the energy that the shows always had. To top off all of their original material, which was generally strong, their shows always included a few excellent covers, notably a stellar version of Stevie Wonder’s, “I Wish” that was right in their wheelhouse. Close my eyes and I can still remember them rocking that out on stage at Nick’s.

Because these guys were such a special live act for me, I’m breaking one of my rules and posting a live track here. I’m going to do that a few more times later on (options start getting sparse after 7:20 or so), but in this case, the studio version of “Love Song” has the exact same 4:10 running time as the version on their Live at Fat City EP. That makes it even easier to justify using the live track here…

I’ve got a 4:10 with a great live clip: Thin Lizzy’s “Hollywood (Down On Your Luck).” They’re playing on the BBC, accompanied by a 70-year-old woman who had been a big fan of theirs:

Tsk, tsk…first you put a remix on the list, now a live track! Where’s the integrity of your rules! Will this open the gateway for James Brown’s “Lost Someone” (10:43, Live at the Apollo) or Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” (2:50, At Folsom Prison) or Cheap Trick’s “I Want You To Want Me” (3:30, Cheap Trick at Budokan)?
