366TAS: 4:07 – Destroyer – Blue Eyes

Looking back at my list of the top 30 albums of 2011, there are two omissions that now look rather egregious to me. I can kinda understand leaving M83’s Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming off the list; it was released late in the year and although I thought at the time that it would grow on me, I decided to go with more well-known quantities instead.

Destroyer’s Kaputt, on the other hand, has no such excuse. I picked it up in the middle of the year and for whatever reason, the first two or three listens didn’t do much for me and I shelved the album until right around the time I was assembling the best-of lists. Upon further review, it’s a great album. More than anything, it’s smooth. Really smooth. Italics smooth! “Blue Eyes” is a great example of the smoothness and it’s and pretty representative of the rest of the album as well.

If there’s any criticism I might have, it’s that Destroyer seems to struggle bringing some of the songs on the album to a fitting conclusion, a problem their fellow list omission solved in an awesome way that was befitting of the year. Speaking of which, Destroyer has a little saxophone action of their own sprinkled throughout Kaputt. This may be the second example of 2011’s sax power, but it won’t be the last…

That is smooth–thank you for highlighting it!

I’ve got R.E.M.’s “Electrolite,” a song that I never really appreciated until I saw them play it live at the Budokan when I was stationed in Japan a few years back:
