366TAS: 4:00 – Del tha Funkee Homosapien & Dinosaur Jr. – Missing Link

The two dominant musical influences in my life in the late 80’s and early 90’s were hip-hop and hard rock. Naturally, when the Judgment Night soundtrack came out featuring some of the day’s top rappers mixing it up with their hard rocking counterparts, I couldn’t get my hands on it fast enough. Living Colour and Run D.M.C.? Ice-T and Slayer? Helmet and the House of Pain? Faith No More and Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E.? Cypress Hill and Pearl Jam? Yes, yes and yes!

Unfortunately, the reality of things was that the album was just okay. At its best, it matched up with the Public Enemy/Anthrax pairing that did “Bring Tha Noize” two years prior, but there were several tracks on the album that were just forgettable (although rap-rock could still get much, much worse as Kid Rock so ably demonstrated for the world later in the decade). One of the highlights that lived up to my fondest hopes was the collaboration between Del tha Funkee Homosapien and Dinosaur Jr. on “Missing Link”.

The only time Del and Dinosaur Jr. got together to play the song live was on the Arsenio Hall show. The video’s right here… and check out the Beastie Boys’ Mike D. on the drums and Mike Watt from the Stooges on bass too:

Well this post sure has drawn an audience…
Welcome to all of my new visitors! In case you’re wondering what’s going on here, here’s a little background on the 366TAS project that I’m doing this year. There’s some other stuff that I’ll be posting as well, but I’m a lazy, lazy blogger and haven’t gotten around to that yet. In the meantime, feel free to poke around the site, check out some of my influences and favorites and keep checking back, as the list grows every day (more or less).

I’ve got one that’s not influenced by hip-hop or hard rock, Depeche Mode’s “Love In Itself”:
