366TAS: 3:47 – Aimee Mann – Driving Sideways

The soundtrack to the motion picture Magnolia was primarily an Aimee Mann album and it may have been her best. Based mostly on the strength of the soundtrack (as well as slightly on the generally good reviews that the film gets), I decided to check out the movie. Unfortunately, I can’t say the movie was half as good as the soundtrack… or a third… or a quarter. In fact, I just couldn’t finish watching it. Pairing a cast of characters who I just don’t care about with a runtime that’s over three hours generally isn’t a good mix, but that’s what Magnolia does and that’s more or less why I didn’t like it at all.

But like I say, the soundtrack is pretty good, featuring some Supertramp, Gabrielle and Jon Brion along with nine tracks from Aimee Mann. “Driving Sideways” is a highlight. Check it out. (The song and soundtrack, but not the movie)

I saw “Magnolia” in the theater when it came out in ’99. It was awfully long, but I can still remember quite a few scenes, even though I haven’t seen it sense.

I’ve got Love and Rockets’ “So Alive,” as integral a part of my memories of the summer of ’89 as certain classic rock songs were to Kid Rock’s (then again, he was a few years older than I…):

I’m just glad you didn’t pick the single “Save Me” off this soundtrack, but you’re totally right about it and who doesn’t love “The Logical Song”.
