366TAS: 3:42 – Spoon – The Underdog

Posting 366 songs by 366 different artists with 366 different run times, I’m sure to run into plenty of things that I like, but maybe I don’t like that much. I’m sure to post lots of stuff that isn’t easily accessible or might have limited appeal. That’s okay though. People have different tastes and there aren’t many songs that will be able to appeal to a wider audience. But every now and then, a song will come around that is really quite good. A song that’s an easy listen and can immediately appeal to just about anyone regardless of tastes.

“The Underdog” is one of those songs. I like Spoon and all, but I’m not especially enthusiastic about them. Alternatively, I can understand how people might shrug their shoulders and be indifferent to some of my favorites, but not this one. I just can’t see how anyone could listen to this and not dance awkwardly and think that this song is a lot of fun. Once you give it a try, you’ll see what I mean.

I’ve been more enthusiastic about Spoon than I am today, but they do have quite a few accessible songs (and the “Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga” album was part of my “Last Days in DC” soundtrack in the summer of ’07…). Plus, at the risk of sounding like a hipster, I saw them play a free show at Rice in the spring of ’97, shortly before I graduated.

I’ve got a kinda haunting ’60s duet for this one: Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood’s “Some Velvet Morning.”
