366TAS – 3:38 – Rilo Kiley – Breakin’ Up

Even though I made the full list of what I plan to post (just about) every day for the full year back in December, it’s still really hard to go through these radio-friendly times because it seems like every day that there’s a tough choice between two or three tracks. Which do I pick? Which do I leave out?!? The unlucky runner-up today was Swedish dancing queen Robyn and her song about fembots. They have feelings too!

As fun as that song is, it meets its match when paired up against Super Mario Brothers 3. Do you remember the 1989 movie/Nintendo advertisement, “The Wizard” starring Fred Savage? In case you need a refresher, here’s the trailer:

Savage’s co-star was a young woman named Jenny Lewis. Since then, Jenny ditched her acting career and went into music, first as the frontwoman for Rilo Kiley and then moving on to her own solo projects and more recently, teaming up with boyfriend Johnathan Rice as “Jenny and Johnny.” Rilo Kiley’s breakout album, Under the Blacklight might be her most acclaimed work to date, drawing Fleetwood Mac comparisons. It’s a solid album top to bottom and “Breakin’ Up” seems like as good a choice as any to feature.

I’ve got Hall & Oates (in an SCTV performance with an intro from Eugene Levy and Joe Flaherty…) with their most underrated single, “Did It In A Minute”:

I glad to see that Robyn made it on the list later with “Dancing On My Own” (4:51). As for Rilo Kiley, I would have gone with “Silver Lining” (3:36) off the same album.
