Throughout my life, I’ve had years where I put more and less effort into finding new music, where by “new” I mean contemporary, newly released, hot-of-the-press. During my later years of high school and continuing through most of college, I listened to a lot of classic rock and other stuff that had come out years, if not decades before. It wasn’t until about 2001 that I started getting back into finding music that was not just new to me, but new to the rest of the world as well.
When I did start to look for new music, one of the first artists I came across and stuck with was John Hiatt. Hiatt’s 2001 album, The Tiki Bar Is Open got a fair bit of airplay on Pittsburgh’s independent radio station WYEP and with tracks like “All the Lilacs in Ohio”, it stayed in heavy rotation for me throughout most of my law school years.
