366TAS: 3:34 – Kenny Loggins – Danger Zone

Imagine this: you’re out on a date with someone and things are going well. You go back to their place and – just as things start to get physical – they fire up the stereo and put on the Kenny Loggins classic, “Danger Zone.” What do you do?!? No, this has never happened to me, but it was the “question of the night” one week at the old karaoke place I used to frequent. Although I grew up watching Top Gun several times a year at the annual vacations with my dad’s family (who love, love, love Top Gun), I’ve never really thought about “Danger Zone” quite the same way since.

This would also be a good time to remind everyone that I’m not necessarily picking the best song at each time as I go through. If that were the case, I would probably be talking about Jane’s Addiction’s, “Been Caught Stealing” today. Sometimes, I might go with something timely, like Stevie Ray Vaughan’s “Taxman” would have been. Actually, had I realized that would have been up today, I probably would have planned on that. Instead, I already used SRV back in February, so he’s out for the rest of the year.

When I’m not busy choosing songs that are especially timely, I’m either looking for something that helps tell a story about my life, my musical tastes or just some way that music has impacted my life. Oh, and new music that I like and want to pass along, but may be a bit under the radar for some my friends.

I’ve got some rock ‘n’ roll from my current neighborhood: the Breeders’ “Cannonball.” (Kelley Deal lives right around the corner from me in Dayton’s Historic South Park neighborhood, and she’s been to one of my house parties. I’ve also done neighborhood watch with her. She’s a good neighbor.)
