Sometimes I wonder if accumulating a big music library is any different than accumulating any other big pile of stuff. Sure, it’s a lot easier to store, especially when you’re getting things in digital format, but sometimes when I’m listening to and sorting through lots of music that I’m not wild about, I wonder why I’m listening to all this stuff when I already have a library of several thousand great tunes. Last year as I was futilely trying to find something new that I liked, this thought crossed my mind and it has again as nothing has struck me so far in 2012.
But by the end of 2011, I had put together a pretty great group of 40 or 50 albums that had something to offer and were welcome additions to the collection. But besides keeping the remainder from getting stale and being a breath of fresh air, all this new music marks the time. Several years from now I’ll remember 2011 and all the things that were going on whenever I come across one of those great songs or albums I found.
I bring that up today because the Eels are one of those bands that never really reached especially favored status in my collection. They were never really a favorite, but they’re a band that helps to mark the time. For me, it was pretty much the law school years when they were in heavy-ish rotation. They’ve fallen out of favor since then and I don’t get around to listening to ’em that much, but they call to mind a bunch of stuff from the early 2000’s. Oh and not to sell ’em short, they’re not bad at all! A little Mr. E’s Beautiful Blues is always a good thing.
