366TAS: 3:23 – God Help the Girl – God Help the Girl

My co-favorite songwriter along with Warren Zevon is Belle & Sebastian’s Stuart Murdoch. Both are excellent storytellers, painting vivid portraits of the subjects of their songs. While the title of Zevon’s, “Things to do in Denver When You’re Dead” was lifted to be the title of a film, Murdoch’s Belle & Sebastian side project, God Help the Girl produced an album intended to serve as the basis for a feature film of its own. To fund the film, Murdoch turned to Kickstarter, and the effort was a great success, turning out the third highest funding for any narrative feature film on Kickstarter. We’ll have to wait awhile before there’s a movie to watch, but for now we can pass the time with the excellent album that will be the basis for the film.

I’ve got Sugarloaf’s “Don’t Call Us, We’ll Call You,” a scathing commentary on the music industry (and probably a sonic precursor of Styx’s “Renegade”):
