When I was growing up, there were a few distinct phases in the evolution of my musical tastes. By the time the late 80’s rolled around, hair bands were all the rage and for awhile they probably amounted to about half of what I was listening to. There’s some debate today about whether some of my favorite rock bands of the era such as Guns N’ Roses and Def Leppard were part of the “hair band” movement or whether they were just hard rock acts (it’s a pretty trivial distinction). Other bands like Mötley Crüe, Poison, Slaughter and Warrant fit the bill pretty clearly and all at least briefly found a spot in my collection.
For the most part, none of these bands left a particularly lasting impression, although I’ll still occasionally rock out to something from that era. “Cherry Pie” isn’t usually the pick when I want to go that way, but some long time ago, I would put it in the old tape deck and crank up the volume.
