366TAS: 3:11 – The Shins – Turn A Square

We still haven’t had a song from 2012 here on the countup, but this is the second time I’ve featured an older song a band putting out a new album within a few days of the posting. I was awfully tempted to put I’m From Barcelona’s, “Always Spring” in this space as a tribute to our awesomely mild winter that officially passed the other day, but it’s appropriate that I would post a Shins track this week, since they’re often seen as a gateway band to the world of indie rock. Aside from eschewing the traditional verse/chorus song arrangement, most of what they do is relatively conventional and accessible. They weren’t my introduction to the indie rock world – that band is coming next week (I think) – but maybe they can be yours…

So far, “Simple Song” and “Fall of ’82” have emerged as my favorite songs from “Port of Morrow,” the Shins’ new disc.

My 3:11 is an ’80s song that I’ve thought that the Shins would be well-suited to cover: “The Unguarded Moment,” by the Church. When I heard “Turn On Me” off of the Shins’ previous album, I thought that it reminded me of “The Unguarded Moment,” definitely not a bad thing.

It’s probably frown upon to suggest “New Slang” (3:51), but my favorite Shins song has to be “Phantom Limb” (4:47) off their underrated “Wincing The Night Away” album.
