366TAS: 2:32 – The Submarines – Modern Inventions

Josh in his fancy Submarines t-shirt... and Blake Hazard of the Submarines in the reflection under the no smoking signA few years ago, my buddy Josh came down to DC visit with friends and hopefully to see the Submarines, a favorite band of his who happened to be playing in town that weekend. Unfortunately, the girl he was hanging out with Saturday night didn’t really care about what Josh wanted to do, so he missed the show. The next morning, some of us gathered for brunch in Adams Morgan. That’s when I snapped this picture of Josh wearing his fancy Submarines t-shirt that you see on the right.

As we wrapped up our meal and were on the way out, a girl sitting at the table behind us (you can see her reflection in the mirror under the “no smoking” sign in the picture) motioned to Josh and said, “nice shirt.” From the time they arrived, Josh thought the folks at that table looked familiar for some reason, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on it. A few seconds later, as we got out to the sidewalk, Josh put it all together and realized that the person who had paid him the compliment was none other than Blake Hazard, one of the two members of the Submarines. We all suggested that Josh go back in to say hi or something, but he didn’t want to. He was probably too starstruck to be coherent anyway, and for a guy who lives in New York and has the occasional celebrity encounter, that’s saying something. If nothing else, they’ll always have brunch…

I’ll go with the epitome of ’80s college rock, Camper Van Beethoven’s “Take The Skinheads Bowling”:
