366TAS: 2:10 – Little Richard – Long Tall Sally

Little Richard is a superstar. A quick glance over his Wikipedia page quickly establishes that much. He helped bring about soul, funk and rock and roll. He was a major influence for big time rock stars like George Harrison, Elton John, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Freddie Mercury, Bob Dylan and Michael Jackson. He officiated weddings for Cyndi Lauper, Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty. He was an original member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Nevertheless, the impression I’ve gotten of Little Richard over the years is that he’s crazy. Sometimes, it’s a fun sort of crazy, like in this GEICO commerical. Other times, it’s just crazy crazy, which was my main takeaway from this wrapup of a show he did here in DC a few years back. I very nearly went to that show and in retrospect, I’m not sure if it would have been great or entirely regrettable. In any case, I like to think that his music reflects both sides of Little Richard: brilliant music pioneer who was also a bit crazy.

I’ll go with some fuzzed-out ’60s garage guitar: “Blues’ Theme” by Davie Allan & The Arrows.
