2011’s Top Albums: #10 – #1

Finally we’ve reached the top ten albums of 2011. No offense to selections 9 and 10, but I kinda feel like this should be a top eight list, because I feel like those albums really distinguished themselves as being a step ahead of the rest this year. If I really want to break things down, I could probably even further distinguish them into the top two and the second six.

You see, the big uncertainty today was which album deserved the top spot: Gang Gang Dance or Mogwai. In the end, I think they’re both deserving candidates. Both albums stayed in heavy rotation for most of the year, yet neither one grew old. Both are strong from start to finish. I kind of feel like I should go with Eye Contact, because it is the more cohesive “album” and since the sprawling, epic “Glass Jar” might be the single best track between the two. But I’ve also been partial to Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will from the first day I heard it. Tough, tough call…

Speaking of tough, albums three through eight were no picnic either and I keep changing my mind… the difference between them is practically nothing.

Finally, I decided to junk the Spotify links to individual track recommendations, but you can click through for the albums… the tracks are all right there! For this top group, I’ve thrown in an extra song selection, although these albums are generally good and consistent enough that MOST of the tracks are going to be winners. Check ’em out… you’ll see what I mean!
